How to See Old Messages When You Join a Telegram Group
Why some Telegram groups show their full history to new members and others start blank, what you can still see, and how to find older messages.
Published · 10 min read
Whether you can see old messages after joining a Telegram group depends on one setting the group's admins control: chat history for new members, set to either visible or hidden. If it is visible, you can scroll back through earlier messages as soon as you join. If it is hidden, you only see what is posted after you arrive, and there is no setting on your side that changes that.
This guide explains how that setting works, how to tell which kind of group you are in, how to search and jump back through a long history, and what is different about the discussion groups attached to channels.
The setting that decides what you see
Every group has an admin setting called Chat History for New Members (the exact wording varies slightly between iPhone, Android and desktop). It has two options:
- Visible. New members see the group's earlier messages, just as long-time members do. You can scroll up as far back as the group goes, minus anything that has been deleted.
- Hidden. New members do not see the messages sent before they joined. The conversation starts, for them, around the moment they arrive.
This is a choice the group's admins make for the whole group. A member cannot switch it, and there is no trick that reveals hidden history. If you see someone online claiming to have a tool or bot that shows hidden messages, treat it as a scam: it is a common way to get people to hand over their login details.
Public groups and private groups
The setting matters mostly for private groups, the ones you join through an invite link. Public groups, the ones with a username and a t.me link anyone can find, keep their history visible in current versions: the option to hide it is not offered while a group is public. That makes sense, because anyone can already open a public group and read it before joining.
So, as a rough guide:
- A public group will normally show you its history.
- A private group may or may not, depending on what its admins chose.
Why admins hide history
Hiding history is not necessarily a sign that something is wrong. Admins do it for ordinary reasons:
- The group is for a course, a cohort or an event, and old messages belong to earlier participants.
- Members shared personal details in the past and the admins want to protect them.
- The group used to be small and private, and the admins do not want newcomers reading years of in-jokes and old arguments.
If you need context, ask in the group. Members are usually happy to point you to the relevant pinned message or summarize what you missed.
How to tell which kind of group you are in
There is no label on the group that says "history visible" or "history hidden" for members. In practice you can tell quickly:
- Scroll up after joining. If you can scroll back past the moment you joined, history is visible. If the conversation starts with your own join notice or shortly before it, history is hidden.
- Check whether it is public. Open the group's info page. A public group shows a public link or username. A private group shows an invite link (if you can see it at all) or nothing.
- Look at the pinned message. In a group with hidden history, admins often pin the rules and key information, because new members cannot scroll back to find them.
Reading a public group before you join
Telegram lets you open a public group and read it without joining. When you open one from a link or from search, you see the conversation with a Join button at the bottom instead of a message box. You can scroll back through the history, open pinned messages, and get a feel for the group before you commit.
This is the best way to check whether a group is what you are looking for. A few minutes of reading tells you more than any description:
- How often do people actually talk?
- Is it conversation, or mostly links and promotions?
- Do the admins respond to problems?
- Is the tone something you want in your notifications every day?
When you find groups through Group Wall's search or by browsing categories, each group page shows its member count, members online, category and rating, which helps you decide which ones are worth opening in the first place.
What you can and can't see
Even in a group with visible history, not everything from the past is still there.
What you can see
- Messages that still exist. Anything not deleted, in a group with visible history.
- Pinned messages. Tap the pinned bar at the top of the group to step through them.
- Shared media, files and links. The group's info page usually has tabs for media, files, links, voice messages and more. This is often the fastest way to find a document someone shared months ago.
- Messages in topics. In groups organized into topics, each topic keeps its own history. Open a topic and scroll within it.
What you can't see
- Messages sent before you joined, if history is hidden. There is no way around this for a member.
- Deleted messages. When a message is deleted for everyone, it is gone for everyone, including new members. Admins can delete messages, and people can delete their own.
- Messages removed by an auto-delete timer. Groups can turn on auto-delete, so messages disappear after a set time. Anything that expired before you arrived is gone.
- Admin-only records. Admins in larger groups have access to a log of recent admin actions. Ordinary members do not see it.
Restricted content
Some groups turn on a setting that restricts saving content. In those groups you can still read the history you are allowed to see, but you cannot forward messages, and in current versions copying and saving media may be blocked too. This affects what you can do with old messages, not whether you can read them.
How to find older messages quickly
In a busy group, scrolling back by hand can take a long time. Telegram has better tools.
Search inside the group
Open the group and look for the search option. On phones it is usually in the group's three-dot menu or on the info page; on desktop there is a search icon at the top of the chat. Type a word or phrase and Telegram shows matching messages, with arrows to step through them.
Search by member
In the search view, most versions let you filter by a specific member, so you only see what one person posted. This is handy when you remember who said something but not the words they used.
Jump to a date
Telegram can take you to a specific day. Depending on your device, you tap the date bubble that appears while scrolling, or look for a calendar icon in search. Pick a date and the chat jumps there. Days with no messages may be greyed out.
Shared media and links
Open the group's info page and look at the tabs below the description. Media, files, links, voice messages and music each have their own list. If you are looking for "that PDF someone posted", this is usually quicker than searching the chat.
Replies and threads
When you find an old message, tap any message it replies to, and Telegram jumps to the original. In current versions you can also see replies to a message, which helps you follow a conversation that was spread out over hours.
Discussion groups attached to channels
Channels are one-way: admins post, subscribers read. Many channels attach a discussion group so that subscribers can comment on posts. Under each post, you see a button such as "Comments" or "Leave a comment".
This is where people often get confused about history, because a discussion group is a group in its own right.
How comments work
When a channel posts, the post is automatically copied into the linked discussion group, and the comments you see under the post are the replies to that copy in the group. That means:
- Tapping "Comments" under a channel post shows the replies to that post, as a thread.
- Opening the discussion group itself shows everything in one stream: the copied channel posts, the comments on them, and any other conversation members have there.
Reading comments without joining
In current versions, you can usually read the comments under a channel's posts without joining the discussion group. Posting a comment may require you to join, depending on how the admins set it up. Some channels require you to join the discussion group before you can comment, and some require admin approval to join.
History in a discussion group
The discussion group follows the same rules as any other group. If it is public, its history is visible. If it is private and its admins hid history, you will only see the group conversation from when you joined. Comment threads under the channel posts are often still reachable from the channel itself, which is a useful way to catch up on older discussion.
Comments that disappear
If comments under a post vanish, the most common reasons are that an admin deleted them, the person who wrote them deleted them, or the discussion group was changed or unlinked from the channel. When a channel switches to a different discussion group, older comments usually stay with the old group rather than moving across.
Leaving and rejoining
If you leave a group and join again later, what you see follows the same setting:
- History visible: you see the full history again, including messages sent while you were away.
- History hidden: you see messages from your new join onward. Messages sent while you were away are not shown.
If an admin removed you from a group, you may not be able to rejoin at all until they lift the restriction.
What old messages tell you about a group
When history is visible, it is one of the most useful signals you have about a group:
- Is the conversation real? A long run of identical promotional posts, or the same few accounts posting links, is not a community.
- Do admins act? Look for spam that sat there for days, or obvious scams no one removed.
- Is it alive? A group with a large member count and nothing posted for weeks is not where you will get answers. Group Wall's Most active right now page orders groups by how many members are online, as Telegram shows it on each group's public page, which helps you avoid groups that look big and are silent.
Staying safe while reading old messages
Old messages are a common place to find scam links that admins never cleaned up. A few rules that apply everywhere on Telegram:
- Do not trust a link just because it is old or pinned. Pins can be stale, and a compromised admin account can pin anything.
- Never share a login code, password or recovery phrase. No group, bot or "history viewer" needs them.
- Real admins do not message you first. If someone DMs you offering to "restore" messages, recover funds or show hidden history, it is a scam.
- Use Telegram's report and block tools on accounts that push you towards any of this.
Every group page on Group Wall has a Report button and shows how many people reported that group as a scam in the last 30 days. That figure is a count, not a verdict, but it is a sensible thing to check.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I see messages from before I joined a Telegram group?
The group's admins set Chat History for New Members to hidden. With that setting, new members only see messages sent after they join. Only an admin can change it.
Is there a way to see hidden history as a member?
No. There is no member-side setting, app or bot that reveals hidden history. Anyone claiming otherwise is very likely trying to steal your account.
Can I read a group without joining it?
Yes, if it is a public group. Open it from its link or from search and you can scroll through the conversation, with a Join button at the bottom. Private groups need an invite link, and you cannot read them before joining.
Where did old messages go in a group that used to show them?
They may have been deleted by admins or by the people who sent them, or removed by an auto-delete timer. If the group changed from public to private, the admins may also have hidden history for new members.
Can I see comments on a channel's old posts?
Usually yes. Tap the comments button under a post to read its thread. If the channel later switched to a different discussion group, older comments may not move with it.
Does leaving a group delete my access to its history?
If history is visible, you see it all again when you rejoin. If it is hidden, you only see messages from your new join onward.
