How to Join a Voice Chat in a Telegram Group
Join a Telegram group voice chat, listen in, raise your hand, mute yourself, and know exactly what other members can see when you do.

To join a voice chat in a Telegram group, open the group, tap the bar at the top that says a voice or video chat is live, and tap Join. You arrive muted in most cases, you can listen right away, and you unmute or raise your hand when you want to speak. The one thing worth knowing before you tap: other people in the chat can see that you joined.
This guide walks through the whole thing from a member's point of view: finding a live chat, joining it, speaking or staying quiet, and understanding what is visible to everyone else. It also explains how a voice chat in a group differs from a live stream in a channel, because the two look similar and behave differently.
What a group voice chat is
A voice chat is a live audio room that lives inside a group. It runs alongside the normal text conversation: the messages keep scrolling while people talk. Anyone in the group can usually join, and the people inside can talk, listen, and in current versions also turn on their camera or share their screen if the admins allow it. That is why recent versions of the apps often call it a video chat rather than a voice chat. It is the same feature; the name changed when video was added.
A few things set it apart from a normal phone call:
- It belongs to the group, not to a person. An admin starts it, and it stays open until an admin ends it, even if the person who started it leaves.
- People come and go freely. You can drop in for two minutes and leave without anyone needing to "hang up".
- The admins control who speaks. They can let everyone talk, or mute new arrivals so that people have to raise their hand first.
- There is no ringing. Nobody calls you. You join if you want to.
Only group admins with the right permission can start a voice chat. As a member, your part is to join, listen and take part.
How to tell a voice chat is happening
When a voice chat is live, Telegram shows a bar or banner at the top of the group, just under the group name. It usually shows a few profile pictures of people already inside and a Join button. In your chat list, the group may also show a small indicator that a call is in progress.
Admins can also schedule a voice chat for later. In that case the bar shows a countdown or a start time instead of a Join button, and you can tap it to ask Telegram to remind you when it begins. The wording varies between iPhone, Android and desktop, but it is usually something like "Notify me" or "Set reminder".
If you missed it, the group itself is often the best place to check. Many groups announce their calls with a pinned message, and a scheduled chat sits at the top of the group until it starts.
How to join a voice chat, step by step
The steps are almost the same on every device. Menus and labels differ a little between iPhone, Android and desktop, so look for the closest match.
- Open the group.
- Tap the voice chat bar at the top of the conversation.
- Telegram may ask for permission to use your microphone the first time. You can allow it now or later; you can still listen without it.
- If you own a channel, you may be asked how you want to appear: as yourself or as one of your channels. Pick one (more on this below).
- Tap Join.
You are now in the room. On a phone, the voice chat opens as a panel showing the participants, with a large button at the bottom for your microphone. You can minimize the panel and keep reading the group while you listen; a small floating control or a bar at the top lets you get back in.
On desktop, the voice chat usually opens in its own window. You can keep it next to the group and type in the chat while you listen.
Joining from a link
Admins can share a direct link to a voice chat, often posted in the group or elsewhere. Tapping it opens the group and takes you to the join screen. If you are not a member of the group yet, you may need to join the group first. Treat a voice chat link like any other link: open it only if you trust where it came from.
If you are not in the group yet
A voice chat is part of a group, so in most cases you need to be a member to join it. If you found a group through Group Wall's search, join the group first, then look for the voice chat bar at the top.
Listening without speaking
Most people in a voice chat are listening, and that is completely normal. Here is how to make sure you stay a listener:
- Check your microphone button. When you join, look at the big button. If it shows a crossed-out microphone or says "Unmute", you are muted. If it is lit up and says you are live or speaking, others can hear you.
- Do not grant microphone access if you do not want it. If you refuse the permission request, Telegram cannot pick up any sound from you at all. You can still hear everything.
- Watch for the "speaking" indicator. When someone's microphone picks up sound, their picture or name is highlighted in the participant list. If you see your own highlighted and you did not mean to speak, mute straight away.
Listening uses data. On a mobile connection, a long voice chat can add up, so Wi-Fi is the better choice if you plan to stay a while.
How to raise your hand
In some voice chats, the admins have set things up so that new participants join muted and cannot unmute themselves. You will notice because the microphone button changes into a hand or says something like "Raise hand" instead of "Unmute".
To ask to speak:
- Tap the raise hand button.
- A hand icon appears next to your name in the participant list, which tells the admins you want to talk.
- Wait. When an admin allows you to speak, Telegram tells you, and your button changes back into a microphone.
- Tap the microphone to unmute and start talking.
A raised hand is a polite request, not a guarantee. Busy rooms can have several people waiting. If you change your mind, tap the button again to lower your hand.
How to mute and unmute yourself
When you are allowed to speak, the main button toggles your microphone:
- Tap once to unmute, then talk.
- Tap again to mute when you finish.
Some versions also support hold to talk: you press and hold the button while you speak, and you are muted again the moment you let go. On desktop, Telegram offers a push-to-talk keyboard shortcut in the voice chat settings, which is handy if you only speak occasionally.
Being muted by an admin
Admins can mute any participant. If an admin mutes you, you cannot unmute yourself until they allow it; your button will show that you have been muted by an admin. This is not a ban. It is how admins keep a large room manageable. If you want to talk again, raise your hand if that option is available, or ask in the text chat.
Muting other people for yourself
On many versions, you can lower the volume of another participant or mute them only for yourself. Tap or long-press their name in the participant list to see the options. This affects what you hear and does not change anything for anyone else.
Turning on video and sharing your screen
In current versions, voice chats in groups can include video. If the admins allow it, you will see a camera button next to the microphone and an option to share your screen.
- Your camera is off when you join. It only turns on if you tap the camera button and allow camera access.
- Before your video goes live, Telegram usually shows you a preview so you can check what others will see.
- Screen sharing shows whatever is on your screen, including notifications that pop up. Close anything private before you start.
If you only want to listen, you can ignore the video buttons completely.
What other members can see when you join
This is the part most people do not think about until after they have joined. A group voice chat is not anonymous.
When you join:
- Your name and profile picture appear in the participant list that everyone in the voice chat can see. People who are not in the call can often see who is inside from the bar at the top of the group.
- Others can see whether you are speaking, muted, or have your hand raised.
- If you turn on your camera or share your screen, everyone in the chat can see it.
- Other participants can tap your name to open your profile, just as they could from the group's member list.
What joining does not do on its own is reveal your phone number. Who can see your number is controlled by your privacy settings, the same as anywhere else in Telegram. If you have not checked them, it is worth doing: open Settings, then Privacy and Security, and look at Phone Number, Profile Photo, and who can call or message you.
Joining as one of your channels
If you are the owner or an admin of a channel, Telegram may let you join a voice chat as that channel instead of as yourself. The participant list then shows the channel's name and picture rather than your personal profile. You choose this when you join, and in many versions you can switch it from the voice chat menu afterwards.
This is useful if you would rather not show your personal account in a public room. Keep in mind that the channel itself is visible and linkable, so anyone can open it.
Recordings
Admins can record a voice chat. When a recording is running, Telegram shows an indicator, usually a red dot, in the voice chat. If you see one, assume that what you say may be saved and shared later. If you are not comfortable with that, stay muted or leave.
A sensible privacy checklist
Before you speak in a voice chat with people you do not know:
- Check that your profile name and picture are things you are happy for strangers to see.
- Check your phone number privacy setting.
- Keep personal details out of what you say: your address, your workplace, your full name if you do not normally use it online.
- Remember that anyone in the room can open your profile and message you, depending on your settings.
Live streams in channels vs voice chats in groups
Channels can host something that looks very similar: a live stream. The controls are almost the same, but the experience as a viewer is different.
- In a group voice chat, members are participants. You appear in the list, you can raise your hand, and the conversation is two-way if the admins allow it.
- In a channel live stream, the channel is broadcasting. Most viewers just watch and listen. Speaking is usually limited to the people the channel's admins bring in.
Groups can also run streams that come from external streaming software instead of people talking in the room. In that case you are mostly a viewer, much like in a channel.
How visible you are as a viewer can differ between these formats and between app versions. The safe assumption is the same in every case: when you join a live audio or video room on Telegram, the admins can see that you are there, and other participants may be able to as well.
Leaving a voice chat
To leave, open the voice chat panel and tap Leave (on some versions it is a red button or an option in the menu). Closing the app does not always leave the chat straight away, so use the button if you want to be sure.
Leaving the voice chat does not remove you from the group. You stay a member and can rejoin the call later, as long as it is still running.
If you want to leave the group entirely, do that separately from the group's info page.
When something does not work
A few common problems and what usually fixes them:
- You cannot hear anything. Check your device volume and that the right speaker or headphones are selected. On a phone, the voice chat panel often has a speaker option.
- Others cannot hear you. Make sure you are unmuted, that you granted microphone permission, and that no other app is using the microphone. On desktop, check that the correct microphone is chosen in the voice chat settings.
- The microphone button is a hand. The admins want people to raise their hand before speaking. See the section above.
- You see no voice chat bar. The chat may have ended, or it may not have started yet. Scheduled chats show a start time instead.
- Echo or background noise. Use headphones, and look for a noise suppression option in the voice chat settings on current versions.
- The app is out of date. Older versions may not show newer features such as video or scheduling. Update Telegram from your app store.
Staying safe in voice chats
Voice chats in open groups attract the same people as open groups do, including scammers. A few rules hold everywhere on Telegram:
- Never share a login code, password or recovery phrase, whether someone asks in the voice chat, in the text chat, or in a private message afterwards. Nobody legitimate needs them.
- Real admins do not message you first to offer help, prizes, investments or "verification". If someone does this after you speak in a call, treat it as a scam.
- Do not install apps or open files someone pushes on you during a call.
- Use Telegram's own tools. You can report or block a user from their profile, and report a group from its info page.
On Group Wall, every group page has a Report button, and it shows how many people reported that group as a scam in the last 30 days. That number is a count, not a verdict, but it is worth a look before you spend time in a group you do not know.
If you are looking for groups that actually hold regular conversations, the Most active right now page lists groups by how many members are online at the moment, which is a reasonable sign that someone will be around to talk to.
Frequently asked questions
Can I listen to a Telegram voice chat without anyone knowing?
Not in a group voice chat. When you join, your name or the channel you joined as appears in the participant list. If you do not want your personal account shown, and you own a channel, you can join as that channel instead.
Can people hear me as soon as I join?
Usually not. In most voice chats you join muted, and you only become audible when you unmute. Check the microphone button to be sure, and refuse microphone permission if you only want to listen.
What does the raised hand mean?
It means you have asked to speak in a voice chat where the admins have muted new participants. An admin can then allow you to talk. You can lower your hand again by tapping the same button.
Can admins see who is in the voice chat?
Yes. Admins see the participant list like everyone else, and they can mute participants and, in current versions, record the chat. A recording is shown with an indicator in the voice chat.
Does joining a voice chat show my phone number?
No, not by itself. Your phone number is shown or hidden according to your privacy settings. Check Settings, then Privacy and Security, to see who can see it.
What is the difference between a voice chat and a live stream?
A voice chat in a group is a shared room where members can take part. A live stream, usually in a channel, is a broadcast where most people watch and listen and only invited people speak.
