How to Mute a Busy Telegram Group Without Leaving It
Mute a noisy Telegram group for an hour, a few days or for good, keep mentions coming through, and use archive and chat folders to stay organized.

To mute a Telegram group, open it, tap its name to open the info page, and choose Mute (on desktop, right-click the group in your chat list and choose Mute notifications). You can mute for a set time or for good, and nobody in the group is told. In current versions, mentions and replies to your own messages in a muted group are still flagged, so you do not miss the messages meant for you.
Below are the exact options, how to fine-tune what still reaches you, and how archive and chat folders can tame a busy chat list without leaving any group.
Why mute instead of leave
Big groups can produce more messages in an hour than you could read in a day. Leaving solves that but loses the group: you lose your place, possibly the invite link, and the chance to dip in when something interesting happens. Muting keeps you in, quietly. Other members see no change, admins are not notified, and you can unmute any time.
How to mute a group
The steps differ slightly between apps, and menu wording changes between versions, but the idea is the same everywhere.
On iPhone
- Open the group.
- Tap the group's name or photo at the top to open its info page.
- Tap Mute.
- Choose how long: options in current versions include muting for a set time (such as an hour or a few days), choosing a custom duration, Disable sound, or Mute forever.
You can also swipe left on the group in your chat list and tap Mute for a quick, indefinite mute.
On Android
- Open the group.
- Tap the group's name at the top, or tap the three-dot menu.
- Tap Mute or Notifications.
- Pick a duration, Disable sound, or mute indefinitely. Current versions also let you set a custom duration.
You can also long-press the group in the chat list and tap the mute (bell) icon at the top.
On desktop
- Right-click the group in your chat list.
- Choose Mute notifications (or Mute).
- Pick a duration, or mute until you turn it back on.
You can also open the group, click its name to open the info panel, and switch notifications off there.
Unmuting
Repeat the same steps and choose Unmute. Timed mutes end on their own; when one expires, the group behaves normally again without you doing anything.
Choosing the right kind of mute
Mute for a while
Useful when a group is busy for a reason that will pass: a big event, a launch, a heated discussion. Mute it for a few hours or a couple of days and it will come back on its own.
Mute forever
For large groups you only want to read when you feel like it. The group stays in your chat list and its unread counter keeps counting, but your phone stays quiet.
Disable sound
A middle ground. You still get notifications on screen, but without the sound. Good for a small group you want to keep an eye on during the working day.
Muting a topic in a forum group
Some large groups are organized into topics, a bit like sub-channels. In current versions you can mute individual topics: open the topic, or long-press it in the topic list, and choose Mute. That lets you follow the announcements topic while muting the general chatter.
What still reaches you when a group is muted
Muting silences the general flow of messages, but Telegram treats messages addressed to you differently.
- Mentions: if someone tags you with your @username, or mentions you by name, the group shows an @ badge in your chat list. In current versions, you are also notified about mentions in muted groups, depending on your settings and app.
- Replies to your messages: when someone replies to something you posted, it counts as a mention. It shows the same badge and, in current versions, can notify you.
- Reactions: Telegram can notify you when someone reacts to your message, and reactions also show a badge in the chat. You can switch reaction notifications off in Settings, then Notifications and Sounds, in current versions.
When you open the muted group, the @ button in the bottom corner of the chat jumps straight to each unread mention or reply, so you can catch up on what concerns you without reading everything. A similar button appears for unread reactions to your messages.
If you want even mentions to stay silent, the only reliable approach is to leave the group, or turn off group notifications more broadly as described next. Exactly how mentions behave in muted chats varies between iPhone, Android and desktop, so check on your own device.
Setting defaults for all groups
Instead of muting groups one by one, you can change the default for every group.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Notifications and Sounds.
- Find the Groups (or Group chats) section.
- Turn notifications off for groups in general, or change the sound and preview.
Exceptions
In the same section you will find Exceptions, which lists every group with its own setting. This is where the per-group choices you made earlier show up. A common setup:
- Group notifications off by default.
- A short list of exceptions for the few groups you want to hear from, such as family or a small team.
That way any new group you join starts muted, and you only ever have to unmute the handful you care about.
The unread badge on your app icon
If you mute a lot of groups, the number on Telegram's app icon can still climb. In Notifications and Sounds, look for the Badge counter options. You can stop counting muted chats, and choose whether the badge counts unread messages or unread chats. Turning off "Include muted chats" keeps the icon number meaningful.
Archive: get muted groups out of sight
Muting stops notifications; archiving moves the group out of your main chat list.
- On a phone: swipe left on the group in the chat list and tap Archive.
- On desktop: right-click the group and choose Archive.
The group moves into the Archived Chats folder at the top of your chat list. To find it, pull down on the chat list (on mobile) or click Archived Chats.
How archived chats behave with new messages depends on whether they are muted:
- Muted archived groups stay in the archive when new messages arrive.
- Unmuted archived groups usually pop back into your main list when a new message comes in. In current versions there is a setting to keep unmuted chats archived too.
So for groups you want out of the way entirely, mute first, then archive. You can unarchive any time by swiping again, or right-clicking, and choosing Unarchive.
Chat folders: sort groups instead of silencing them
If you are in many groups, chat folders let you split your chat list into tabs.
- Open Settings and go to Chat Folders (on desktop, Folders).
- Create a new folder and give it a name such as "Groups", "Work" or "Crypto".
- Choose what goes in it: individual chats, or whole types such as Groups.
- Optionally exclude muted chats, read chats or archived chats.
Some useful setups:
- "Groups" folder: include all groups. Your main tab then holds your private chats, and group traffic lives on its own tab.
- "Unread" folder: include everything, but exclude read chats, so you only see what needs attention.
- "Important" folder: include a hand-picked list of groups and exclude muted chats, so it only lights up for the groups you actually follow.
Folders appear as tabs at the top of the chat list on mobile, and as a sidebar on desktop. Each tab can show an unread count. In current versions, long-pressing a folder tab (or right-clicking it on desktop) can offer an option to mark everything in it as read, which is a quick way to clear the backlog from a pile of busy groups.
Clearing a backlog fast
Coming back to a muted group with a big unread count?
- Mark as read: long-press the group in the chat list (on desktop, right-click) and choose Mark as read. The counter clears without opening the chat.
- Jump to mentions: open the group and tap the @ button to read only what was addressed to you.
- Read pinned messages: tap the pinned bar at the top of the group to see the latest announcement, which in a well-run group is often all you need.
- Search for what you care about: use the group's search to look for a keyword rather than scrolling.
Quieting a group in other ways
Turn off message previews
In Notifications and Sounds, you can stop message text from showing in notifications. Useful for groups you keep unmuted but do not want read off your lock screen.
Restrict who can add you to groups
If the problem is being added to noisy groups you never chose, go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Groups and Channels, and set who can add you to My Contacts. Strangers then have to send you an invite link instead.
Leaving after all
If a group stays noisy, unhelpful or full of spam, leaving is fine. Open its info page, use the three-dot menu and choose Leave group. If you want a calmer replacement, the most active groups list on Group Wall shows where conversation is lively right now, and each group page shows its member count, members online, category and rating before you join. You can also search by topic or browse categories.
Frequently asked questions
Will people in the group know I muted it?
No. Muting is private to your device and account. Admins and members see no change, and you remain a normal member who can read and post.
Will I still get notified if someone mentions me in a muted group?
In current versions, mentions and replies to your messages are still flagged with an @ badge in the chat list, and you can be notified about them even when the group is muted. The exact behavior differs between iPhone, Android and desktop, so check on your own device.
What is the difference between muting and archiving?
Muting stops notifications. Archiving moves the chat out of your main list into Archived Chats. For a group you want both silent and out of sight, mute it and then archive it, so new messages do not pull it back into your main list.
Can I mute only part of a group?
In groups organized into topics, current versions let you mute individual topics while keeping others on. In ordinary groups without topics, muting applies to the whole group, though mentions and replies still get through.
Why does Telegram's app icon still show a big number?
Muted chats can still count toward the badge on the app icon. In Settings, under Notifications and Sounds, turn off the option to include muted chats in the badge counter.
Does muting a group save battery or data?
Somewhat: fewer notifications mean fewer wake-ups and sounds. The group's messages still download when you open Telegram, though, so archiving or leaving very busy groups saves more.
