When Telegram shows "This group can't be displayed" instead of a group's messages, it means the group has been restricted, either for the platform or region you are using or because it broke Telegram's rules. The group may still exist, but you are not meant to see it from where you are. In most cases the honest answer is that the restriction is deliberate, and the best move is to find a different group on the same topic.

This guide explains what the message means, the common reasons for it, why a group can work on one device and not another, and what you can sensibly do next. It does not explain how to get around a restriction, because restrictions like this usually exist for a reason, and trying to bypass them can put your account or your device at risk.

What the message actually says

The wording varies a little between apps and versions, but you will usually see something like:

  • "This group can't be displayed"
  • "This channel can't be displayed" (the same thing for channels)
  • A version that adds a reason, such as that it was used to spread prohibited content, that it violated local laws, or that it is not available on your platform

Sometimes the message replaces the whole chat. Sometimes you can see the group's name and picture in search or in your chat list, but opening it shows only the notice. Either way, Telegram is telling you the content is restricted for you.

This is different from "group not found" or an invite link that no longer works. In those cases, the group may have been deleted, renamed, or the link revoked. Group Wall has a separate guide on the "group not found" error. "Can't be displayed" means Telegram knows the group, and has chosen not to show it to you.

The common reasons

There are a few main reasons a group gets this label. Telegram does not always say which one applies, so you often have to infer it from the wording and from where you see it.

1. App store rules on iPhone and Android

Apps distributed through Apple's App Store and Google Play have to follow those stores' content rules. Those rules are stricter than Telegram's own terms in some areas, especially around sexually explicit material. To stay in the stores, the official Telegram apps restrict certain groups and channels on those platforms.

This is the most common reason a group shows up as "can't be displayed" on a phone. The wording often mentions that the content is not available on your platform, or simply hides it with no explanation.

2. Regional or legal restrictions

Telegram may restrict a group in specific countries when local law requires it, for example after an order from a court or authority in that country. In that case, the group can be visible to people elsewhere but hidden for users whose account or connection is associated with that country. The message may mention local laws.

3. A breach of Telegram's terms of service

If a group was used for content that Telegram prohibits everywhere, such as illegal material, promoting violence, or certain kinds of scams, Telegram can block it for everyone. Sometimes the group is removed entirely; sometimes it remains as a shell that shows the restriction notice. You can read Telegram's own rules and frequently asked questions on its official site at telegram.org/faq.

4. Repeated reports

Groups that are reported many times for spam, scams or abuse can be reviewed and restricted. Not every reported group ends up blocked, and not every blocked group was reported, but user reports are one way restricted content comes to Telegram's attention.

Why it works on one device but not another

People often notice that a group shows normally on a computer but appears as "can't be displayed" on their phone, or the other way around. That usually points to the first reason above: platform rules.

  • The official mobile apps downloaded from the App Store or Google Play follow those stores' content policies.
  • Desktop and web versions are not distributed through those mobile stores, so the same platform restriction may not apply in the same way.
  • Your country can matter too, when a restriction is based on local law.

This is why two people in the same room can get different results for the same group. It does not mean your app is broken, and reinstalling it will not change the outcome.

It is worth being clear about one thing: when a group is hidden on a platform because of content rules, the group very often contains exactly the kind of material those rules are written for. "It shows on my laptop" does not mean the group is fine; it only means a different set of rules applied there.

What this guide will not tell you

You may find posts online promising to "fix" this message with a setting, a different app, a VPN or a trick. Group Wall does not publish those instructions, for a few reasons:

  • The restriction may be legal. If a group is blocked in your country by law, getting around it can have consequences for you, not for the group.
  • The content may be harmful. Restrictions often exist because the group was used for explicit material, scams or illegal content.
  • Unofficial apps are a security risk. Modified or third-party Telegram apps promising "unrestricted" access can steal your login, your messages or your contacts. Only use the official Telegram apps from telegram.org, the App Store or Google Play.
  • "Fix" guides are a common lure. Some links that claim to unlock restricted groups lead to phishing pages that ask for your phone number and login code. Entering them hands over your account.

If someone in a chat sends you a link, a file or an app to "unlock" a restricted group, treat it as a scam.

What you can do instead

Accept that it may be unavailable on purpose

The simplest and safest response is to take the message at face value. The group is not available to you, and that is often intentional. If you were looking for something specific, the topic itself is rarely limited to one group.

Look for another group on the same topic

For most ordinary topics, such as a hobby, a language, a game, a city or a study subject, there are several groups. You can search Group Wall by topic, browse categories, or check which groups are most active right now. Group Wall lists English-language public groups, so you can preview a group's page before you open it in Telegram.

Check whether the link is the problem

If you got here through an invite link someone sent, double-check that it really is the group you think it is. Scammers sometimes share links that look like a well-known community but point somewhere else. If the person who sent the link insists you must use a special app or setting to see it, that is a red flag.

Ask the person who invited you

If a friend, colleague or class invited you and the group seems ordinary, ask them. There may be a simple explanation, such as the group having been deleted and recreated, or the admins having moved to a new group. The admins may share a new link.

If you are a member of a group that just became restricted

Sometimes a group you were happily part of suddenly shows this message. If that happens:

  • Do not panic about your own account. A group being restricted does not mean your account is in trouble.
  • Do not hunt for workarounds. Wait for the admins to announce what happened, often through a separate channel, website or another group they run.
  • Be careful with "new group" links that appear afterwards. Scammers sometimes take advantage of a restricted group by posting "here is our new home" links that lead to fake copies. Only trust a new link if it comes from an admin you can verify, through a source you already trusted.

Reporting a group that should be restricted

If you come across a group that is visible but clearly breaks Telegram's rules, for example it is spreading scams, explicit material involving minors, violence or fraud, you can report it to Telegram. Open the group's info page, find the menu (usually three dots), and choose Report. Telegram asks you to pick a reason. Wording varies between iPhone, Android and desktop, but the Report option is in the group menu on all of them.

If the group is listed on Group Wall, you can also use the Report button on its group page. Group Wall shows how many people reported a group as a scam in the last 30 days. It is a count, not a verdict, but it helps other readers decide whether to look more closely before joining. Group Wall's guide on reporting covers both in more detail.

A note for group admins who see this on their own group

Group Wall is written for members, but sometimes a member is also a small-group admin who is surprised to see this on their own group. If your group is restricted:

  • Review what has been posted recently. A single member posting explicit or illegal material can get a group restricted.
  • Tighten who can post media and links, and make sure spam is removed quickly.
  • Telegram's official support pages, linked from telegram.org/faq, describe how to contact Telegram about moderation decisions.

Group Wall cannot lift or change a Telegram restriction, and neither can any third-party service that claims it can for a fee.

Frequently asked questions

Does "this group can't be displayed" mean the group was deleted?

Not necessarily. A deleted group usually just disappears or shows as not found. "Can't be displayed" means the group is known to Telegram but restricted for you, either for your platform, your region, or for everyone because it broke the rules.

Why can my friend see the group but I can't?

You may be using different platforms, for example one of you on a phone app from an app store and the other on desktop, or you may be in different countries where different legal restrictions apply. The restriction applies to the viewer's situation, not just to the group.

Will reinstalling Telegram fix it?

No. The message is not a bug in your app. It comes from Telegram's decision to restrict that group for you, and reinstalling the official app will show the same result.

Is it safe to use a modified Telegram app to see restricted groups?

No. Unofficial or modified apps can steal your account, read your messages or install malware. Only use the official Telegram apps. Anyone offering a special app to unlock a group should be treated as a scammer.

Can I get in trouble for being in a group that was later restricted?

Being a member of a group that Telegram later restricts does not in itself put your account at risk. Laws differ between countries, though, so if a group was restricted for legal reasons in your country, the sensible step is to leave it and not try to access it.

Where can I find a similar group that works?

Search for the topic rather than the specific group. On Group Wall you can search groups or browse by category to find public groups on the same subject.
