How to Search Messages Inside a Telegram Group
Find any message in a Telegram group: search by keyword, filter by member, jump to a date, use hashtags, and browse shared media, links and files.

To search inside a Telegram group, open the group and start a search from its menu: tap the group's name and choose Search, or use the three-dot menu, or the magnifying glass on desktop (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F also works there). Type a word and Telegram jumps between matching messages. From the same search bar you can narrow results to one member, jump to a specific date, and tap any hashtag to find every message that uses it.
Here is how each of those works on iPhone, Android and desktop, plus the shared-media tabs that are often faster than searching, and the reasons a search sometimes comes up empty.
Basic search inside a group
On iPhone
- Open the group.
- Tap the group's name at the top to open its info page.
- Tap Search (in some versions it is under More or the three-dot menu).
- Type your word or phrase.
Matches appear one at a time in the chat, with up and down arrows at the bottom to move between them. In current versions you can switch to a list of all results, which is easier when there are many. You can also pull down slightly in the chat to reveal a search field in some versions.
On Android
- Open the group.
- Tap the three-dot menu at the top right.
- Tap Search.
- Type your term.
Use the arrows at the bottom of the screen to step through results, or tap the results counter to see them as a list where your version supports it.
On desktop
- Open the group.
- Click the magnifying-glass icon at the top of the chat, or press Ctrl+F (Windows and Linux) or Cmd+F (Mac).
- Type your term.
Results appear in a list; click one to jump to that message in the conversation.
Tips for better keyword results
- Search for distinctive words. "Meeting" will match hundreds of messages; a project name, a product model or an unusual word will match a handful.
- Try variations. Search matches words and word beginnings, so try singular and plural, and both spellings of a name.
- Search the link, not the description. If you are looking for a link someone shared, search part of the domain name.
- Use the shared-links tab (below) when you only remember that someone posted a link.
Filter by member: messages from one person
Often you remember who said something rather than what they said.
- On mobile: open the group search, then tap the person icon next to the search field (on some versions it shows as an @ or a silhouette). Pick the member from the list, or start typing their name. Results now show only that person's messages, and you can add a keyword to narrow it further.
- On desktop: open search and click the person icon in the search bar, or type a member's name in the "from" option it offers, then choose them.
This is especially useful for finding everything an admin has posted, or for checking what someone who just DMed you has actually said in the group. If a person claims to be staff but has never posted anything in the group, that tells you something.
You can also see someone's messages starting from their profile in some versions: tap the person in the group, and look for an option to search their messages in this chat.
Jump to a date
If you know roughly when something was posted, jumping to a date is faster than scrolling.
- On mobile: open the group search and tap the calendar icon in the search bar. A calendar appears; tap a day to jump to the first message from that day. In current versions, tapping the date bubble that floats at the top of the chat while you scroll also opens the calendar.
- On desktop: in search, click the calendar icon to choose a date. You can also click a date header in the chat.
Once you land on a date, scroll down from there; the messages around it are usually what you were looking for.
Hashtags
Many groups use hashtags to label posts: #announcement, #question, #job, #event, and so on. Telegram turns them into tappable links.
- Tap a hashtag in any message and Telegram searches for it. In current versions you get a choice of where to look: this chat, all your chats, or, for some hashtags, public posts across Telegram.
- Type a hashtag in the group search to find every message in the group that used it.
If you run into a group that labels its posts consistently, hashtags are the quickest way to browse it by subject. If the pinned message explains which tags the group uses, read it first.
Shared media, files, links and voice messages
Sometimes you are not after a sentence but a thing someone shared. The group's info page collects them into tabs.
- Open the group and tap its name (on desktop, open the info panel on the right).
- Scroll to the shared-content tabs. Depending on your version and what the group has shared, you will see tabs such as Media (photos and videos), Files, Links, Music, Voice and GIFs.
- Tap a tab to browse. Most tabs also have a search field of their own, so you can search file names or link text.
The Links tab is a lifesaver in groups where people share resources, and the Files tab is where PDFs, documents and spreadsheets end up. Tap any item and, in most versions, you can jump to the message where it was shared, which shows you the context.
Mentions, replies and pinned messages
A few other shortcuts help you find what matters without searching at all.
- The @ button: when you have unread mentions or replies to your messages, an @ button appears at the bottom corner of the chat. Tapping it jumps to each one in turn.
- Pinned messages: the bar at the top of the chat shows the current pinned message. Tap it to jump there; tap repeatedly or use the list icon to see all pinned messages. Rules, FAQs and announcements usually live here.
- Replies: tap the quoted message at the top of a reply to jump to the original.
- Topics: in a group organized into topics, open the right topic first, then search inside it. Depending on your version, searching from the group's main view may cover all topics at once.
Searching across all your chats
If you are not sure which group something was in, use Telegram's main search.
- Go to your chat list.
- Tap or click the search field at the top.
- Type your term.
Results include chats and contacts at the top, then a Messages section with matches from your chats. In current versions there are filter tabs for things like media, links, files and music, and you can narrow by chat or date in some versions.
Global search also finds public groups and channels by name, which is handy, but for finding new groups by topic you will usually get better results from a directory designed for it, such as the Group Wall search or categories.
Why a search can come up empty
If you are sure a message exists but search cannot find it, one of these is usually the reason.
You joined after it was posted, and history is hidden
Admins can choose whether new members see the chat history from before they joined. If history is hidden for new members, you cannot see those older messages, so you cannot search them either.
The message was deleted
Admins delete spam and off-topic posts, and members can delete their own messages. Deleted messages are gone from search too.
It was in a different topic or a different group
Groups with topics keep each topic separate. Make sure you are searching in the right one. Many communities also run a separate announcement channel alongside the group; the message you remember may be there.
It was an image or a voice message
Search looks at text. A screenshot of a message is an image, and search will not read the words inside it. Captions on photos and files are searchable, and the file name is searchable in the Files tab. For voice messages, Telegram offers transcription in current versions for some users, but do not count on transcripts being searchable.
Different spelling or language
Try the other spelling, a shorter part of the word, or the word in the language the group actually uses.
Saving what you find
Once you have found something useful, save it so you never have to search again.
- Forward it to Saved Messages: long-press the message, choose Forward, and send it to Saved Messages, your private cloud notebook in Telegram.
- Copy a link to the message: in public groups, long-press (or right-click on desktop) and choose Copy Link. The link opens that exact message.
- Pin it, if you are an admin, so everyone can find it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I search a Telegram group without joining it?
For public groups, you can often open the group through its link and read recent messages without joining, and in many versions you can search what is visible. For private groups, you need to be a member.
Can I search for messages from one specific person?
Yes. Open the group search and tap the person icon (on desktop, the "from" option), choose the member, and you will see only their messages. Add a keyword to narrow it further.
How do I go to a specific date in a Telegram group?
Open the group search and tap the calendar icon, then choose the day. In current versions you can also tap the floating date bubble at the top of the chat while scrolling to open the calendar.
Why can't I find old messages in a group I just joined?
The admins may have hidden chat history from new members, which means messages from before you joined are not visible to you and cannot be searched. Ask in the group if there is an archive or a pinned summary.
Can I search for links or files only?
Yes. Open the group's info page and use the Links or Files tab, each of which has its own search. The main Telegram search also has filter tabs for links and files in current versions.
Does searching a group notify anyone?
No. Searching is private. Nobody in the group, including the admins, is told what you searched for.
