Why a Telegram Group Link Says "Group Not Found" (and How to Fix It)
The real reasons a Telegram group link fails, from changed usernames to expired invites and bans, and what you can do about each one.
Published · 10 min read
A Telegram group link usually stops working for one of a few reasons: the group changed or dropped its username, the invite link expired or was revoked, the group was deleted, or the link was copied wrong. Less often, you were removed from the group, or the group is restricted on your platform or in your country. Most of these can be worked around once you know which one you are dealing with.
The exact error wording varies between iPhone, Android, desktop and the web preview, and it has changed between versions, so this guide focuses on the cause behind the message rather than one specific phrase.
First, check what kind of link it is
The fix depends on whether you have a public link or an invite link.
- Public link: t.me/ followed by a name, such as t.me/somegroupname. It points to a username.
- Invite link: t.me/+ followed by a string of random characters, or the older format t.me/joinchat/ followed by random characters. It is a private invitation the admins created.
A public link fails when the username no longer points to that group. An invite link fails when the invitation itself is no longer valid. Keep that in mind as you go through the causes below.
Cause 1: The link was copied or typed wrong
Start with the boring one, because it is common.
- A missing or extra character. Usernames are short and easy to mistype, and invite strings are long and random. One wrong character is enough.
- Confusable characters. A lowercase l and a capital I, a zero and a capital O, underscores that disappeared when a link was shared as plain text.
- Truncated links. Some apps cut long links at the edge of a message or add punctuation to the end when you copy. A full stop or bracket stuck on the end of a link can break it.
- Extra text pasted in. Words copied together with the link, or a link wrapped inside another link from a shortener or social site.
How to fix it: copy the link again from the original source rather than retyping it, check the end of the link for stray punctuation, and open it directly in Telegram. If someone sent it to you, ask them to share it again or to forward a message from the group, which lets you tap through to it.
Cause 2: The group changed its username
Public group links are tied to a username, and admins can change it. When they do, the old t.me link no longer leads to the group, and the old name may become available for someone else to take.
What you see: usually a message saying the username doesn't exist or can't be found, or the link opens something completely unrelated if someone else has since claimed the name.
How to fix it:
- Search for the group by name in Telegram's search bar. The display name often stays the same even when the username changes, and public groups can appear in global search results.
- Look for the group on a directory by its topic or name. On Group Wall, try search with the group's name or topic.
- Ask a member who is still in the group to send you the current link.
Be careful with the second possibility: if an old username now opens a different group or channel, do not assume it is the same community under new management. Read it first, and be extra wary if it asks for money or account details.
Cause 3: The group went private
Admins can remove a group's username, which turns it into a private group. Any public t.me/name link for it then stops working, and the only way in is an invite link from someone inside.
What you see: the same "doesn't exist" style of message as for a changed username, because from the link's point of view, the name simply no longer exists.
How to fix it: you need an invite link from an admin or member. If the group has a website, social account or linked channel, check there for a current invite.
Cause 4: The invite link expired, ran out, or was revoked
Invite links for private groups are deliberately temporary in many cases. Admins can:
- set an expiry date on a link
- set a maximum number of uses, after which it stops working
- revoke a link at any time, for example because it was posted somewhere public and attracted spammers
- reset the main invite link, which makes the previous one invalid
What you see: a message saying the invite link is invalid or has expired, or a notice that the link can no longer be used. Wording varies by app.
How to fix it: there is nothing to repair on your side. You need a new, current invite link from the group's admins or a member. If you found the link on a website or post, check whether there is a more recent one; communities that rotate links usually publish the new one in the same place.
A note on links posted publicly: when a "private" invite link is posted openly on a website or forum and quickly stops working, that is often the admins revoking it on purpose to control who joins.
Cause 5: The group was deleted
A group's creator can delete it entirely. Telegram can also remove groups that break its terms of service, for example for spam, scams or illegal content.
What you see: the link no longer resolves to anything, much like a changed username or an expired invite. If you were already a member, the group may disappear from your chat list or show that it is no longer accessible.
How to fix it: you cannot bring back a deleted group. If the community moved somewhere new, members usually know. Search for the group's name or topic to see whether a replacement exists, but check any replacement carefully, because scammers sometimes create lookalike groups after a popular one disappears.
Cause 6: You were removed or banned
If admins removed you, you can usually rejoin a public group from its link unless they also banned you. If you were banned, you cannot join again until an admin lifts the ban, and the link will not let you in.
What you see: depending on the app, you may be told that you cannot join, that you were banned, or that the group is inaccessible. The chat may stay in your list without letting you post.
How to fix it: if you think it was a mistake, contact an admin through another route, such as a linked channel, the group's website or someone you know in the group. Explain politely. Do not create a new account to get back in; that usually breaks group rules and can lead to wider bans.
Cause 7: The group is restricted on your platform or in your region
Telegram sometimes restricts access to specific groups or channels on certain platforms or in certain countries, often to comply with app store rules or local laws. In that case the link opens, but instead of the chat you see a notice that it cannot be displayed.
What you see: a message saying the group can't be displayed or is unavailable, sometimes with a short reason.
How to fix it: there is often no fix from the member's side, and you should respect restrictions that exist for legal reasons. The same group may sometimes be accessible from a different Telegram app (for example desktop instead of a mobile store version), because restrictions can differ between platforms, but if a group is restricted for its content, that is a good reason to stay away from it.
Cause 8: You have joined too many groups and channels
Telegram limits how many groups and channels a single account can be a member of. If you have reached that limit, joining another one fails, and the app tells you that you have joined too many.
How to fix it: leave groups and channels you no longer use, then try again. Open each one's info page or three-dot menu and choose Leave (the wording varies by app). Clearing out old groups is good housekeeping anyway.
Cause 9: Your app or connection is the problem
Occasionally the link is fine and something on your end is not.
- Outdated app. Old versions may not handle newer link formats or features. Update Telegram from your app store or the official website.
- The link opens in a browser instead of the app. On the t.me web page, tap the button to open in Telegram. If nothing happens, copy the link and paste it into a chat with yourself (Saved Messages), then tap it there.
- Network trouble. A weak connection can make a link look broken when the app simply cannot reach Telegram. Try again on a different network.
- Temporary limits. If you tried to join many groups very quickly, Telegram may briefly slow you down. Waiting a while usually clears it.
A quick troubleshooting order
When a link fails, work through it like this:
- Look at the link. Public name or invite string? Any stray characters or punctuation?
- Copy it fresh from the original source and open it in Telegram, or paste it into Saved Messages and tap it.
- Update the app and check your connection.
- Search by name in Telegram for public groups that may have changed their username.
- Ask for a new link from an admin or member if it was an invite link.
- Check whether you were removed if the group still appears in your chats.
- Leave unused groups if Telegram says you have joined too many.
Stay alert for "fix" offers
A broken link is a common hook for scams. Watch for:
- Strangers offering a "working link" in exchange for payment. Real groups do not sell access through random DMs.
- "Restore access" or "unban" services that ask for your phone number, login code or password. Anyone who asks for a Telegram login code is trying to take over your account. Telegram will never ask for it in a chat.
- Lookalike groups that appear after a popular group vanishes, using the same name and photo. Check who the admins are and read the chat before trusting it.
- Websites that ask you to log in to Telegram to "view" a group. You never need to enter your Telegram credentials on a third-party page to open a group link.
Never share passwords or wallet recovery phrases with anyone who offers help. If someone pushes you, block and report them from the three-dot menu on their profile. Telegram's FAQ covers reporting and account security.
Finding a working alternative
If the group you wanted is gone for good, there is usually another community around the same topic. On Group Wall you can browse categories or look at the top groups to find public groups that are active right now. Every listing there is a public group, so you can open it and read the conversation before joining. If you run a group and changed its link, you can submit it again so people can find it under its new name.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Telegram group link say the username doesn't exist?
The group most likely changed its username, removed it to become private, or was deleted. Try searching for the group by name in Telegram, or ask a member for the current link.
How do I get a new invite link for a private group?
Ask an admin or a member who can share invites. If the group has a website, linked channel or social account, the current link is often posted there. You cannot generate an invite link yourself unless you are an admin with that permission.
Can I rejoin a group after being removed?
If you were only removed, you can usually rejoin through a working link. If you were banned, you cannot rejoin until an admin lifts the ban. Contact an admin through another channel if you think it was a mistake.
Why does a group link work for my friend but not for me?
Possible reasons include a ban on your account, a restriction on your platform or in your country, an outdated app, or having reached the limit on how many groups you can join. Try updating the app and leaving unused groups first.
Is it safe to pay someone for a working group link?
No. Legitimate groups do not sell access through private messages. Paying a stranger for a link is one of the most common Telegram scams.
What should I do if someone asks for my login code to fix the link?
Refuse, block them and report them. A login code gives full access to your account, and no genuine admin, support agent or service ever needs it.
