How to Report a Telegram Group or a Scammer in It
Step-by-step: report a message, a user or a whole Telegram group in the app, block a scammer, and flag a group listed on Group Wall.

You can report a single message, a person or an entire group directly inside Telegram, and it takes a few taps: long-press the message (or open the profile or the group's info page), choose Report, then pick a reason. If someone is trying to scam you, block them as well, because reporting tells Telegram's moderators while blocking protects you right now. If you found the group on Group Wall, you can also report its listing so our own moderators take a look.
This guide walks through each of those, explains what each one actually does, and covers what to do when the scammer has already got something from you.
Before you report: what is worth reporting
Telegram's report tools are meant for content and behavior that breaks its rules, not for opinions you disagree with. The clear cases in a group are:
- Scams and fraud: fake giveaways, "double your crypto" offers, fake investment returns, fake support agents, requests for your login code or wallet seed phrase.
- Impersonation: an account pretending to be the group's admin, a well-known person or a company.
- Spam: the same promotional message posted again and again, or bots flooding a group with links.
- Violence, threats and hate.
- Illegal goods or services, and content involving the abuse of children, which you should always report.
- Personal data: someone posting another person's private information without consent.
A group that is simply off-topic, low-quality or rude to you is usually better handled by leaving it or by telling its admins. Save the report button for things that actually break the rules, so the reports that matter are not buried.
How to report a message in a Telegram group
Reporting a specific message is the most precise option, because the moderator sees exactly what you saw.
- Open the group and find the message.
- On a phone, long-press the message. On desktop, right-click it.
- Choose Report from the menu. On some versions you first tap Select and then find Report among the options, or you may need to tap More.
- Pick the reason that fits best. In current versions Telegram may show a short series of choices, narrowing down from a general category to a more specific one.
- If there is a box for a comment, add a short, factual note, for example "Pretends to be the admin and asks members to send USDT to claim a reward."
- Confirm.
Reporting several messages at once
If a scammer has posted a series of messages, select them together. Long-press one message, then tap the others to add them to the selection (on desktop, click to select and then click more messages). With the messages selected, look for Report in the toolbar or the three-dot menu. Reporting the whole series gives a moderator more context than a single line.
Do not delete the evidence first
If you are an admin of the group, report before you delete. Once a message is gone, there is nothing left for anyone to review. If you are an ordinary member, you cannot delete other people's messages anyway, so just report.
How to report a user in a group
Sometimes the problem is not one message but a person: an account that keeps DMing members, or one that pretends to be someone it is not.
- Tap the person's name or profile photo in the group to open their profile.
- Tap the three-dot menu (on iPhone it may be More or …).
- Choose Report if it appears, then pick a reason and confirm.
The exact place of the Report option differs between iPhone, Android and desktop, and it has moved between versions. If you do not see it on the profile, report one of the person's messages instead, which is always available.
When a stranger DMs you first
The most common scam in Telegram groups does not happen in the group at all. You post a question, and within minutes a "support agent" or "admin" messages you privately. When someone you have never talked to starts a private chat with you, Telegram usually shows a bar at the top of that chat with options such as Report Spam and Block User. Using it reports the conversation and blocks the sender in one step.
A useful rule: real admins do not message you first. If you need help from a group's staff, ask in the group itself or contact the admins listed in the group's description or pinned message, and check that the username you are talking to matches exactly.
How to report a whole group
If the entire group exists to scam people, or it is built around content that breaks Telegram's rules, report the group itself.
- Open the group.
- Tap the group's name at the top to open its info page.
- Tap the three-dot menu (on desktop, the menu in the top corner of the chat or info panel).
- Choose Report, pick a reason, add a short description if offered, and confirm.
You can usually report a group without leaving it, and you can leave afterwards. On some versions, leaving a group also offers a report option on the way out.
Groups versus channels
The steps are the same for channels: open the channel's info page, use the three-dot menu, and choose Report. If a scam group links to a "results" channel or a "payout proofs" channel, report both.
How to block someone
Reporting and blocking do different jobs. A report goes to Telegram's moderators, who decide what to do. Blocking is immediate and personal: it stops that account from contacting you.
To block someone:
- Open their profile (tap their name in the group or open your private chat with them).
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Choose Block user and confirm.
Once blocked, the person can no longer send you private messages or call you, and Telegram hides details such as your last-seen time from them. You can see and manage your blocked list in Settings, under Privacy and Security, then Blocked Users (the wording varies slightly between apps).
Keep in mind what blocking does not do. It does not remove the person from groups you are both in, and it does not report them. If someone is running a scam, do both: report, then block.
Telling the group's admins
Telegram's moderators look at reports across the whole platform. A group's own admins can act much faster inside their group: they can remove the scammer, delete the messages and warn other members.
- Check the pinned message and the group description for a list of admins or a way to contact them.
- Open the member list and look for people marked as admin or owner (the label sits next to their name in many versions).
- Reply to the scam message in the group with a short, calm note like "Admins, this account is impersonating staff." That also warns other members who see it.
Be careful when contacting an admin privately. Scammers create accounts with nearly identical names and photos. Compare the username, not just the display name, and start the conversation from the admin list rather than from a link someone sends you.
What happens after you report
Telegram does not usually send you a personal update about what happened to your report. Reports are reviewed by Telegram's moderators, and possible outcomes include a warning, restrictions on the account, a "SCAM" or "FAKE" label shown next to the account or group's name, or removal. You may simply notice that the account or group is gone a while later.
A few practical points:
- One clear report beats many vague ones. Choose the most accurate reason and add a short explanation.
- Do not organize mass false reports against a group you dislike. It is against Telegram's rules and makes real reports harder to act on.
- Accounts that send spam get restricted. Telegram limits accounts reported for spam, which can stop them messaging people who are not their contacts. If your own account has been limited by mistake, Telegram's official @SpamBot lets you check your status and appeal.

Reporting a group listed on Group Wall
Group Wall lists Telegram groups so people can find them, and listing a group is not a guarantee that it is honest. If you found a group here and it turned out to be a scam, please tell us. That helps the next person who lands on the same page.
How to use the Report button
Every group page on Group Wall has a Report this listing button near the bottom of the page.
- Open the group's page (you can find it again through search if you closed it).
- Press Report this listing.
- Choose a reason. The options include spam or mass advertising, scam or fraud, adult content, violence or hate, illegal content, impersonating someone, a dead or wrong link, a wrong category, and something else.
- Add details if you can. They are optional for most reasons and required for "Something else". A sentence about what happened ("Admin account DMed me asking for my seed phrase to 'verify' my wallet") is more useful than a long story.
- Send it.
You do not need an account to report. Each report goes to a moderation queue and is read by a person.
What the scam-report count on a group page means
When people have reported a group as a scam or as an impersonation, its Group Wall page shows a notice such as "Reported as a scam by 3 people in the last 30 days."
Read that number carefully:
- It counts different people, not total clicks, over the last 30 days only.
- Reports that a moderator reviewed and dismissed are not counted.
- It is a count, not a verdict. A report is an accusation until a moderator has looked at it. A group can be reported by a rival, and a brand-new scam may not have been reported yet.
So treat the count as one signal among others. If you see it, slow down: read the group's pinned rules, look at how admins behave, and never send money or wallet details to anyone who messages you from there. If you see no count, that does not mean the group has been checked and found safe. More on how listings are handled is on the FAQ page, and you can reach us through contact if something needs more than a report.
If the scammer already got something from you
Reporting matters, but if you have already shared something, act on that first.
You shared a Telegram login code or password
- Open Settings, then Devices (or Privacy and Security, then Active Sessions, depending on your version).
- End every session you do not recognize, or use Terminate all other sessions.
- Turn on Two-Step Verification in Privacy and Security if it is not already on, and choose a strong password you do not use anywhere else.
- Tell your contacts that anything sent from your account in the meantime was not you.
Telegram will never ask you for a login code in a chat. Anyone who asks for it is trying to take over your account.
You shared a wallet seed phrase or approved a wallet transaction
A seed phrase gives full control of the wallet. Assume the wallet is compromised: move any remaining funds to a brand-new wallet with a new seed phrase, created on a device you trust, as quickly as possible. If you connected a wallet to a site and signed something, check your wallet for token approvals you do not recognize and revoke them. Crypto transfers generally cannot be reversed, which is why speed matters.
You sent money
Report the account and the group in Telegram, keep screenshots of the chat, the usernames and any wallet addresses or payment details, and contact your bank or payment provider. For larger losses, report to the police or your country's fraud reporting service. Be wary of anyone who then contacts you offering to "recover" your funds for a fee. That is a second scam aimed at people who just lost money to the first one.
Keeping evidence without making things worse
Take screenshots that show the username (not just the display name), the message and the time. On desktop you can also copy a link to a message in a public group by right-clicking it. Keep those somewhere outside Telegram.
Do not argue with the scammer, threaten them or try to "scam them back". It achieves nothing and can get your own account reported. Report, block, warn the group if you can, and move on.
Frequently asked questions
Will the person know I reported them?
Telegram does not tell people who reported them. They might guess if you argued with them publicly beforehand, but the report itself is not shown to them. Reports on Group Wall are not shown to the group's owner either.
Does reporting a group get it deleted straight away?
No. A report sends the group to Telegram's moderators for review, and they decide what action, if any, to take. That can take time, and you usually will not get a personal reply. Meanwhile, block the people involved and leave the group if it is a scam.
What is the difference between blocking and reporting?
Blocking is instant and only affects you: the person can no longer message or call you. Reporting asks Telegram to review the account or content, which can lead to restrictions that protect everyone. For a scammer, do both.
Can I report a group I am not a member of?
If it is a public group, you can usually open it through its link, view its info page and report it from the three-dot menu without joining. For a private group you would need to be inside it. On Group Wall, anyone can report a listed group from its page, no account needed.
Someone with the admin's name DMed me. How do I check if it is really them?
Compare the username (the @handle), not the display name or photo, against the admins listed in the group's member list or pinned message. Even if it matches, real admins rarely start private conversations, and none will ask for your login code, password, seed phrase or a "verification" payment.
What does "Reported as a scam by 2 people in the last 30 days" mean on Group Wall?
It means two different people reported that group as a scam or impersonation in the last 30 days, and a moderator has not dismissed those reports. It is a count, not a verdict, but it is a good reason to be extra careful with that group.
